About Crisis Services

A person experiencing mental health symptoms and in need of rapid response and assistance can contact the Crisis Department at any time by phone or in person. Our compassionate clinicians are available to listen and help work through the crisis situation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

In addition to listening and providing support, our Master’s level clinicians assess for behavioral health needs, a variety of substance abuse services, and make clinical recommendations to provide the right level of support for the individual experiencing a mental health crisis. This can include referral to traditional outpatient services, utilization of crisis stabilization chairs, or in some instances referral for psychiatric acute care. on whether someone needs inpatient services. A psychiatrist is on call in case acute care is necessary.

Crisis clinicians will assist after a crisis situation by helping to identify the client’s natural supports system and coordinating with family and close friends to create a safety plan. This crisis prevention planning process can include referrals to other programs at The Guidance Center such as to outpatient counseling and/or substance abuse treatment, and referrals to community agencies as needed.

The Crisis department collaborates with several community partners, including Flagstaff Medical Center, Guardian, Law Enforcement, Terros, and the Coconino County Detention Facility.

Crisis Stabilization Unit

Our expanded Crisis Stabilization Unit offers a safe and therapeutic environment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Those experiencing a mental health crisis can receive intensive support from a multi-disciplined team for up to 23 hours and 59 minutes in order to de-escalate from a crisis situation. Members needing additional services will receive transitional support with appropriate follow-up.

A person entering the CSU will be assessed and monitored by a registered nurse and other tech staff. A medical provider is also on call to provide additional support as needed.

The goal of CSU is to resolve the immediate crisis, which can involve lessening symptoms of psychiatric conditions, reduction of intoxication level, and managing other crisis concerns. The dedicated team of nurses and technicians work closely with other service providers and family members to determine what level of care the patient needs following their time in the CSU. A safety plan will be created to determine what steps can be taken so the person does not have another crisis situation.

Safety plans often include items such as:

  • Going home with a responsible family member or friend
  • Case management
  • ACT Team referral
  • PAC Admission
  • Scheduling an intake appointment
  • Inpatient or Outpatient Substance Abuse Recovery.

Other referrals may be made to support the safety plan.
